CUT! (Choose the Ultimate Title) · Last updated: 15 June 2026
The short version. CUT! has no accounts and no logins. We don’t collect your name, email, contacts, or location, and we don’t use advertising or cross-app tracking. The only thing we record is anonymous gameplay data — which movies win or lose, and basic facts about each game — that cannot be linked back to you. Your movie list, saved games, and settings stay on your own device.
Who we are
CUT! is a movie-bracket game that helps you find a favourite film through a knockout tournament. This policy explains what information the app handles and why. If you have questions, contact us at hello@cutapp.co.uk.
1. Information we collect
a) Anonymous gameplay analytics. When you play, the app sends a small, anonymous record of what happened so we can understand which films are popular and improve the game. This data contains no name, account, email, advertising ID, or device identifier. Specifically:
- Per matchup: the winning and losing film (title and year), the round, the game mode (solo or group), and the active theme.
- Per completed tournament: the bracket size (e.g. 64 or 32), the number of rounds, how long the game took, the game mode and theme, and whether music and sound effects were turned on or off.
Because these records carry no identifier, we have no way to connect them to you or to each other as a single person.
b) Data stored on your device. The app saves the following in your browser’s local storage so the game works and remembers your preferences. This information stays on your device and is not sent to us:
- Your imported movie list and any in-progress tournament (so you can resume it).
- Your past champions (“Hall of Champions” history).
- Your settings: chosen theme, music/sound-effect on-off preferences, and your Pro status.
You can clear this at any time by clearing your browser’s site data or uninstalling the app.
c) Content from third parties. To show movie posters and play short soundtrack previews, the app fetches content from public sources — TMDB (The Movie Database) for posters, and Apple’s iTunes catalogue for short soundtrack previews. When the app requests this content, those services receive the request (including, as with any internet request, your device’s IP address and the title being looked up). We don’t control their handling of that data; see their policies linked below. If you import a ratings file (for example a CSV exported from IMDb or Letterboxd), that file is read entirely on your device and is not uploaded to us or anyone else.
This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
d) Technical data processed by our providers. Our website host and our database provider may process limited technical information (such as IP addresses in standard server logs) purely to deliver and secure the service. We don’t use this to identify you.
2. What we do not collect
- No accounts, usernames, names, or email addresses.
- No precise or background location.
- No contacts, photos, or files.
- No advertising identifiers and no cross-app or cross-site tracking.
- No third-party advertising or analytics SDKs.
3. How we use information
- To operate the game and remember your progress and settings on your device.
- To understand, in aggregate and anonymously, which films are popular and how people play, so we can improve CUT!.
- To keep the service working and secure.
4. Legal basis (for users in the EEA/UK)
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the game. The analytics data is anonymous and not personally identifying, which keeps the impact on your privacy minimal. Data kept on your device is functional and never leaves it.
5. Cookies and local storage
CUT! does not use advertising or tracking cookies. It uses your browser’s local storage only for the on-device features described in section 1(b).
6. Third-party services
We rely on these providers. Their handling of any data they receive is governed by their own policies:
| Service | Role | Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Netlify | Website hosting | netlify.com/privacy |
| TMDB | Movie posters & data | themoviedb.org/privacy-policy |
| Supabase | Anonymous analytics database | supabase.com/privacy |
| Apple (iTunes) | Soundtrack previews | apple.com/legal/privacy |
7. Data retention
Anonymous gameplay records are kept only as long as they’re useful for understanding trends, and may be deleted or aggregated over time. On-device data remains until you clear it or uninstall the app.
8. Children’s privacy
CUT! is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data. Because our gameplay analytics are anonymous, we generally cannot locate a record that belongs to a specific person. You remain in full control of the data on your device — you can view it in your browser and remove it at any time by clearing site data or uninstalling. For any privacy question, email hello@cutapp.co.uk.
10. International transfers
Our providers may process data in countries other than yours. We choose reputable providers that maintain appropriate safeguards for the limited data they handle.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we do, we’ll change the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
